Summer Concert June 2015

The title of the programme this year was ‘Feel the Spirit’ .This was a celebration of the uplifting and the inspiring in sacred choral music. The diverse programme of works originated in very different times, cultures, and musical contexts. In performing each we explored the many ways composers expressed faith and spirituality through their music. From the radiant Italian baroque sound of Vivaldi’s ever-popular Gloria, then we journeyed through the history of sacred choral music, and across several continents. With classics like Mozart’s joyful Laudate Dominum, and Morten Lauridsen’s hauntingly beautiful O Magnum Mysterium, our programme set the inspirational alongside the meditative, the peaceful alongside the invigorating. We set feet a-tappin’ with our contemporary American Gospel choruses — they’re hard not to move along to! While many of the choral works heard at the concert, originated in the church, they have more recently carried their messages of longing, hope, and joy into wider popular culture, and continue to speak to people of all faiths and none.
