Pentland Singers ConcertsThe choir sings a wide range of music, varying from large choral works to traditional, popular and spiritual music. Four concerts are performed each year, two in early December and two in early June. These performances are a mix of classical pieces and other works, usually to a theme. Christmas 2011Our Christmas Concert took place in Balerno High School on the 7th December. Sadly, the performance on the 8th had to be cancelled because of school closure due to the strong winds. The concert on the 7th was however very well received. You can see the details of the music for that concert and those to be held in 2012 here. Autumn 2011On October 8th, the Pentland Singers and the Junior Singers took part in Balerno Music Festival. See the details of the music for our concerts throughout the year here. Spring and Summer 2011Our Summer Concert, The Songwriters, was on Saturday 4th June in Currie High School, when we performed works by Schubert, Vaughan Williams and Coldplay. Our guests were the Alba Sinfonia Strings. Hear some samples. Our own Jessica Leary (Musical Director of the Junior Pentland Singers) and Joe Doody (our accompanist) delighted the audience with Soprano and Tenor Schubert solos. The Alba Sinfonia Strings played the Moderato from String Seranade by Dvorak and a Divertimento by Mozart, as well as accompanying the choirs for much of the programme. Jessica, Joe and choir member Barry Williamson provided the solos for the choir's performance of Schubert's Mass in G. The Pentland Junior Singers sang a selection of songs, and also joined the adult choir for a rendition of Coldplay's Viva la Vida, two of the children taking the solo parts. Other soloists from the choir were Douglas Esslemont, Gordon Horne, Audrey Jones, Elaine Marr and Hamish McCool. See the pictures! Our Spring Concert took place on Thursday 7th April in Balerno High School, with an audience of record breaking number! We presented our Melodies and Musicals selection which was received enthusiastically. The concert began with a surprise item from Dean Park Primary School, directed by one of our choir members. Pentland Singers sang medleys from the musicals les Miserables, Porgy and Bess and West Side Story, and modern arrangements of the well-loved melodies the Londonderry Air and the Irish Blessing (arranged by Bob Chilcott) and Sullivan's The Lost Chord (arranged by Peter Gritton). Accompaniment was provided by guests John Cameron on piano and Brodie Jarvie on bass guitar. The Pentland Junior Singers delighted the audience with their selection of melodies, including the Skye Boat Song and Lennon & McCartney's Hey Jude. Our guest soloist was Michael Fu on violin, playing a Vivaldi Violin Concerto. Pictures of the concert can be seen here. Charitable DonationsThrough the generosity of our audiences, and from members, the choir has made donations to over one hundred charitable organisations within the members catchment area. This year we made donations to the following charities: MS Society Scotland; Ravelrig Riding for the Disabled; St Joseph's Development Fund; Support in Mind Scotland Christmas concert 2010Sadly, the planned Christmas Concert on the 1 and 2 December 2010 - Christmas Then and Now - had to be cancelled due to the heavy snow and school closures. |
